First impression is this looks like Jacksonville City Nights crossed with The Twilight Singers’ Blackberry Belle & Powder Burns.
Pretty excited about this album even though I feel like I should temper my expectations based on how MOR his last few albums have been. But now that he’s shed the Cardinals I’m hopeful this will mark a return to the more intimate and personal side of Ryan. I’m not expecting sad bastard music since he a) seems happy now and b) isn’t drinking or drugging anymore, but it would be nice to get some tunes that feel like they’re coming straight from an honest emotional place as opposed to a genre exercise. We’ll see.
